One of the kids came home yesterday sacred to death because her English class next fall will be studying Shakespeare’s King Lear. I reminded her that at least is was written in a form of English. When I was her age, they assigned us Homer’s The Odyssey to read, understand, and discuss. I’ve used algebra more than my waning knowledge of that epic poem. I have to confess that I liked algebra when I was in school. I had a really inventive teacher who showed us all sorts of nifty relationships with whole numbers, square numbers and what seemed like half of the alphabet as well. I still remember some of the unique things he would do with square numbers that showed how math makes an impact on our everyday world. In the interim, I guess we’ll be brushing up on Shakespeare all summer. To honor the Bard, bring in any work or collection of works by William Shakespeare that DOES NOT include King Lear and 30 points will be yours at the end of Round 3 (before the Double Down Dare).
