Now that baseball season is almost to the postseason, Baltimore Oriole fans will have yet another long winter to recall the better days of years past, when the team used to draft players who made it to the big league roster and actually contributed to winning seasons instead of just picking up a paycheck. Come to think of it, I’ve heard a similar thing said about the men who’ve donned the cape and cowl to play Batman on the silver screen. My thinking tends to be a little more esoteric. For example, at night when I look up at the stars I don’t think of the vastness of space but rather about all of the named spacecraft America has sent into orbit over the decades. And like a losing team, they are all soon forgotten after they’ve fallen. Even if you’re not an Oriole fan this year, at some point you’ve rooted for a team that was destined for something far less than greatness. I grew up with some horrible Atlanta Braves teams in the late 80s that still make me think our current company softball team could have beaten them. Tonight, your team will pick up 20 points at the end of Round 3 (before the Double Dow Dare) when you bring in a team photo of the losingest team you’ve ever rooted for. Your host will give you the points and take pity on you when you show the photo.
