I had a new neighbor move in across the street. He’s from Chicago and says he’s still a Bears fan even though they haven’t been worth anything since Walter Payton retired. If I knew him better I would have told him that they have been the Great Pretenders of the NFL for a very long time. He spent a few minutes telling me how Mr. Payton used to train in the offseason by running up sand hills. I mentioned that there were a couple of places in the U.S. that he could have ran long distance up sand dunes instead of the smaller mounds he ran on, but he looked as me as if I had just said something sacrilegious. That may be, but I still think the Bears have always been overrated. Is there a team in professional sports that you don’t necessarily hated but you think their fans worship them with unjustified reverence?
